The South Cape Meadows Nature Conservancy is a bird watching paradise! It's a nature preserve situated on 200 acres in Cape May, New Jersey. It's FREE to visit and open to the public from sunrise to sunset. There's free parking in their on-site parking lot.
** This post contains several photos. Please let them all load. You can double-click on each one to have it open-up in a new window in an enlarged size to see the details up close.
You'll want to dress appropriately for the current weather conditions. Wear comfortable walking shoes and bring your own water bottle. In addition, bring bug spray, sunscreen, binoculars and your camera. Please make sure that you throw any trash away that you have or find during your walk. There's trash cans out front that you can use. Help to keep the area clean!
At the front of the nature preserve you'll find all kinds of information regarding different birds who migrate through the area or call the area home along with conservation information. Take the time to educate yourself on it while you're there.
The walking paths are easy to navigate and walk. I have a replaced hip and knee and was able to walk them with no problem. There are a few benches along the way that you can sit down on to rest or to just take-in the beauty of the surrounding area.
Once you get about 3/4 of the way around the walking trail you'll come across a bird watching blind. You can go inside it to enjoy some of the shade. It's also a great place to observe some of the birds when they're around. We often see professional photographers hanging out in this area taking photos of the wildlife that they see.
On our particular walk we observed at least a dozen different species of birds, three turtles, five rabbits and a frog! I think this is a nice FREE nature activity that the entire family can enjoy together when visiting the south Jersey Shore area. You'll want to allow at least an hour in your schedule if you plan on walking the entire trail.
