Last month friends who live in Iowa came for a visit. At the top of their list was spending a day in Gettysburg. We took them down early on a Saturday and spent the day visiting Soldiers National Cemetery, the Gettysburg Battlefield and the Gettysburg National Military Park Museum. We did a lot of walking and after 8 hours still didn't see everything that they wanted to see.
First stop of the day was a visit to Soldiers National Cemetery. Robin is a huge history buff, especially on things related to the Civil War. He's traced his ancestry and found that his great -grandfather and great-uncle both fought and died in the Civil War. Visiting the cemetery is FREE. You'll find various parking lots around the cemetery that you can park in.
All of the walkways through the cemetery are paved, so wheelchair accessible. They request that you stay on the paved walkways and don't go off wandering through the grassy areas. You'll want to wear comfortable walking shoes and dress appropriately for the weather. I always recommend that you bring along sunscreen and a few water bottles for the day.
One thing that Robin particularly wanted to see was the spot where President Lincoln gave his famous Gettysburg Address. There's a historical marker and a monument dedicated to Lincoln's Gettysburg Address that he gave on November 19th, 1863. You can take photographs of both while you're there. In my one photo you can see Robin and his lovely wife Kelly.
From start to finish...you'll want to allow an hour in your schedule to walk through Soldiers National Cemetery. We took our time to stop and read all of the memorials and to photograph several of them. There are a few park benches along the way that you can sit down on. A lot of the cemetery is out in the sun but there are several large old trees that you can sit under if you're needing some shade.
