In the early 1980's I was a young teenager and remember hearing something about the Irish Hunger Strike. I had forgotten about it after all of these years until I stumbled upon the 1981 Irish Hunger Strike Monument in North Wildwood (Village of Anglesea), New Jersey.
The monument was given on the 20th anniversary of the
1981 Hunger Strike in honor of those who gave their lives. The names of the following people died during the hunger strike:
Thomas McElwee
Mickey Devine
Kieran Doherty
Kevin Lynch
Martin Hurson
Joe McDonnell
Patsy O'hara
Raymond McCreesh
Francis Hughes
Bobby Sands
The bottom of the memorial stone states the following: We the Irish American people dedicate this monument to the generations of men and women who have given their lives in the name of freedom. The monument is made out of granite and features a christian cross that has been decorated with Irish motifs.
