Veterans Park is located in Susquehanna Township right off of Elmerton Ave. in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. It's a large park with a children's playground, athletic fields, picnic pavilions, walking trail, public restrooms, etc. What really impresses me about this park is their war memorials.
On Veteran's Day we visited the park to pay our respects to our fallen heroes. There are several war memorials with park benches for you to check out. It's a great way to pay your respects and to also teach our children about the true history involving our country.
The World War II Memorial is quite large and beautiful. (shown in the first photograph). It's in memory of those who served from all of the military branches in WW II. The names are listed on the front and back, so make sure you walk around the entire memorial to see all of the names. The second photograph shows the back side.
My wife paints seashells for a hobby. You'll see them in some of the photographs in this post. We like to leave a patriotic themed shell at each war memorial that we visit.
To the left of that one you'll find the Vietnam War Memorial to honor all of those who served. The Vietnam War 1959 - 1975. That was a hard fought war where thousands of Americans lost their lives. It was not a popular war and the majority of Americans (back then) were against it. You can learn more by looking up some reputable sources online.
Finally....we paid our respects at the Korean War Memorial that's dedicated to all of those who served in the Korean War from 1950 - 1955. There's a nice informational plaque near this memorial that you can read that gives you historic information about the conflict.
The Harrisburg area has several beautiful neighborhood parks that have various war memorials in them. It's nice to visit them with your family for "play time outdoors" but it's equally as important to visit them to pay your respects to our fallen heroes. It can be a great learning tool for children to learn the history of the United States too.
