The historic
Mercer County Courthouse is located in
Mercer, Pennsylvania and was built in 1910. It's one of the first buildings that you'll notice when driving around in this small town, because it's the tallest building in the area.
It features a dark red brick exterior that is accented with light sandstone. The building is regal and important looking, measuring 180 feet wide. One of the most distinctive features of the courthouse is the beautiful clock tower that sits on top...with a clock facing in all four directions. The building reminds of a state capitol building, but is actually the county courthouse!
This stunning courthouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1998 and located on the property you'll find the Mercy County Soldiers' Monument and Memorial. There are park benches nearby where you can sit, relax and pay your respects.
If you're unfamiliar with the area...you'll find it located at Diamond, Erie and Pitt Streets. The locals told us that they just call this section of town the Courthouse Square. Surrounding the courthouse are some buildings with services for the community and some small downtown businesses. The Mercer County Jail is nearby and within walking distance.
We were traveling through the area and stumbled upon this old courthouse which really caught our eye. We parked the car and got out and walked around the area. If you enjoy looking at old buildings, you'll really enjoy seeing this one. Plus...if you're lucky, you may see one of the Amish horse and buggies driving by too!
