The Hummel Nature Trail is located off West Main Street in Hummelstown. If you're unfamiliar with the area...Hummelstown is a small town located between Harrisburg and Hershey in Pennsylvania. Main Street is the main thoroughfare through the town.
It features a free parking area, a picnic pavilion, and 1 mile walking trail that runs along the Swatara Creek. You'll want to bring along your own water bottles (there's no water fountains), wear comfortable walking shoes, sunscreen and bring along insect repellent. There's no running water bathroom facilities either.
On the day that we visited the park was getting some major work done to it. There were heavy equipment digging up an area (not sure what was being done). We parked and headed down the "marked" walking trail. We didn't get too far. The area was really overgrown and hadn't been maintained for some time. I guess that's why there were workers there trying to improve things. We got about a 1/4 mile in and turned around and went back.
We grabbed our picnic lunches from the cooler and headed to the covered pinic pavilion and enjoyed a quick lunch. It was nice to be sittind down in the shade. The temperatures were hot that day and being right beside the Swatara Creek didn't provide any type of coolness. Regardless, it was nice to get off our feet.
In total we were there for about an hour. I think this would be a great place to go on quick walks or light-walking hikes if they put some effort into making it better. It definitely needs some serious trail work (or at least it did when we were there in September 2023). I think some landscaping with flowers and other things would make a nice addition too.
