Visiting the Assateague Lighthouse

Assateague Lighthouse
If your heading to northern Virginia, specifically Chincoteague Island or Assateague Island, you'll find to visit the beautiful Assateague Lighthouse, or Assateague Light for short. It was built in 1867 and stands 142 feet tall. It's owned by the Fish & Wildlife Service and is operated by the U.S. Coast Guard.

One of the things I absolutely love about this particular lighthouse is that its a working one that still helps aid the ships and boats as they come ashore or go out to sea. It's conical shaped and painted in a dark shade of red and white (striping pattern) with a solid black top. It's powered by an electronically controlled beacon (light).

If you want to take a tour of the inside of this gorgeous lighthouse, you'll have to plan your visit during the summertime. You can only tour it during the weekends, from April through November. Admission to tour the inside of the lighthouse is free, but they do appreciate donations which are used to keep the lighthouse running and looking nice for visitors.
Assateague Lighthouse
You can walk around the Assateague Lighthouse grounds and get some beautiful views of the surrounding area. In addition, you'll find many shorebirds nesting here or playing here, in their natural habitat. On the day that we visited, we also spotted two large turtles nearby. If you're into general birdwatching, you can do that here too.

My husband and I love visiting lighthouses and to-date, this one is one of our favorites! We've blogged many times about the one's that we've visited and posted photographs of them right here on our blog. If you're heading to Chincoteague and/or Assateague Island, a visit to the Assateague Lighthouse needs to be on your agenda! It's a must-see in our book!

8 Great Places to Shop in Cape May New Jersey

8 Great Places to Shop in Cape May New Jersey
Cape May in New Jersey is a great place to visit if your heading to the south Jersey Shore. It's a year-round coastal town that is extremely family-friendly. You'll find a vivacious art scene, theater that is always booked with great shows, great dining options, family entertainment venues, a hopping beach scene and of course...great shopping!
Out of the Past Antiques in Cape May New Jersey

When visiting Cape May, I love to shop for antiques and have two great places that I love to visit. The first one is called Out of the Past Antiques located on 394 Myrtle Avenue. This building doesn't look like much on the outside, but inside you'll find some gorgeous goodies to buy. During the summer season, they're open daily, during the spring & fall seasons, they're open during the weekends and during winter...it's hit or miss on their hours.

You'll find miniature doll furniture, old jewelry, antique glassware, china, clothing, furniture & accessories for your home, prints & photographs, old toys, costumes and more. It's a place that you'll definitely want to check out if your looking for some antiques.
Tea by the Sea in Cape May New Jersey

One of my favorite places to shop for antiques & gifts is a place called Tea by the Sea located on 405 W. Perry Street. Their name is a little bit mis-leading because they sell a LOT more than just tea! They have tea accessories, 100's of different teas, figurines, gift items, keepsake items, etc. A nice little gift shop that is super charming to visit!

They occupy the front corner of this medium-sized antique mall, so we always visit Tea by the Sea and then venture in and through all of the individual booths in the antique portion of the store/mall. The last time I was there...I purchased some souvenirs, birthday gifts, a coastal lamp for my home, some beautiful scarves, two pieces of jewelry, etc. I always find some special goodies when I visit.
Good Scents in Cape May New Jersey

Good Scents is located on 327 Carpenter Lane. They sell a wide variety of home fragrance products, bath & body products, jewelry, incense, candles, Turkish lanterns, music CD's, books and more! You can shop their physical retail store in Cape May or you can shop their store online & have your purchases shipped directly to you. A few months ago I purchased some lovely candles from this store!
Lynn Arden's Children Shoppe in Cape May New Jersey

Since I have 2 young grandchildren, I love to shop at Lynn Arden's Children Shoppe located at the Washington Street Mall. Oh yeah, no visit is complete until you visit some of the stores at the Washington Street Mall in Cape May! This one is located at 325 Washington Street. You can shop their retail store or shop their online store!

At Lynn Arden's Children Shoppe you'll find some of the cutest baby & children's clothing that you've ever seen! I call it "boutique style" apparel that you don't see in all of those cookie-cutter type's of stores. In addition, they sell maternity clothing, tween clothing, gifts and toys for the little ones!
Sea Star Boutique in Cape May New Jersey

One of my top favorite stores is the Sea Star Boutique located on 108 S. Lafayette Street. This store is a women's apparel store that sells boutique style and high-end designer brands. I love walking into this store and browsing around. Just be prepared, if you're used to shopping cheap department stores for apparel, this is probably not the store for you. If you like boutique style clothing, adore designer brands and are willing to pay more...then definitely head to the Sea Star Boutique!
Swain's Ace Hardware Store in Cape May New Jersey

The next store that we like to visit is called Swain's Ace Hardware located on 305 Jackson Street. This hardware store has been in business since 1896 and is open year-round. So, why do we like visiting this hardware store? Well, because they sell all kinds of other things too! I've purchased souvenirs, home decor items and gifts from this store!
8 Great Places to Shop in Cape May New Jersey

I mentioned the Washington Street Mall but it deserves it's own little section here too! This is an outdoor mall, so you walk outside from store to store. You'll find children's stores, gift shops, art galleries, candy shops, ice cream parlors, restaurants, souvenir stores, kitchen shops, toy stores, clothing stores & boutiques and so much more! This is the biggest shopping mall in Cape May!

Well, there you have it! These 8 great places to shop in Cape May New Jersey are some of my absolute favorites! You'll find other stores that are great too!

Hiking at 1,000 Steps and Jack's Mountain in Huntingdon

Hiking at 1,000 Steps and Jack's Mountain in Huntingdon
1,000 Steps is a Hiking Trail located in Huntingdon Pennsylvania, off of U.S. route 22. This hiking park offers free admission and free off-road parking (it's a pull-off area alongside the road) to visitors. One Thousand Steps is part of the National Heritage Trail.

This hiking trail was built into the side of Jack's Mountain and was used by local miners to go back and forth from their mining job. This mountain was mined heavily from 1900 to the early 1950's. These days as you walk & hike along the trails, you'll find beautiful fossils and petrified wood for decades and centuries past.
Hiking 1,000 Steps and Jack's Mountain in Huntingdon Pennsylvania

Elevation can reach as high as 2,321 feet. The Juniata River runs through this mountain, so it offers visitors some spectacular views of the surrounding area. If you have breathing issues, I don't recommend this trail, at least going the entire way up to the top.
Hiking 1,000 Steps and Jack's Mountain in Huntingdon Pennsylvania

When visiting, you'll want to wear appropriate clothing, including hiking shoes or walking shoes. In addition, take some non-refrigerated food with you and plenty of water to drink. You'll want to pack some sunscreen and insect repellent too.
Hiking 1,000 Steps and Jack's Mountain in Huntingdon Pennsylvania

The best time to go hiking on these trails is during the spring, early summer and fall seasons. Dogs are permitted as long as they stay on a leash and under the owner's control. In addition, please have your dog do his/her business somewhere OFF the trail! No one wants to accidentally step into that!
Hiking 1,000 Steps and Jack's Mountain in Huntingdon Pennsylvania

The trail is approximately 3 1/2 miles and length and is considered to be an intermediate to expert hiking trail. In other words, if you're not in good health and physical shape, this trail is not for you. It's rocky in places, steep inclines going up and narrow at times.
Hiking 1,000 Steps and Jack's Mountain in Huntingdon Pennsylvania

On the day that we visited, we had gorgeous weather with temps near 80 degrees and low humidity. The sky was a gorgeous blue, a few clouds, but nothing major on the weather horizon. We spent several hours here walking the trails and enjoying the beautiful scenery. We highly recommend taking this outdoor adventure if your relatively in good health and are used to a lot of physical exercise. You'll definitely get a workout and be treated to some of the prettiest scenic views that Pennsylvania has to offer.

The guest rooms are modern, super clean, spacious and beautifully decorated. Our suite had 2 large king-sized beds, a sitting area, desk area, closet and a very large bathroom that was fully stocked with all of the bath linens that we would need. The suite had a mini bar that was stocked with snacks, beverages & alcohol (you do pay for them) and we had a Keurig coffee brewer in our room, so that we could enjoy complimentary coffee every morning.
Mount Airy Casino Resort in Mount Pocono Pennsylvania
Cameras are NOT permitted on the Casino floor or in any of the high-roller or club areas where there is casino & gambling action going on. Hence, I won't be showing you an pictures from those particular areas. With that said, I can show you a few photos that I was able to take while on our press & media tour of some of the "bar areas" that are located within those areas.
Mount Airy Casino Resort in Mount Pocono Pennsylvania
They have various entertainment venues throughout the resort where you can catch a show, watch a comedy skit, take in a music concert, dance the night away in their club, etc. Trust me, you won't get bored with all of the things you can see and do at Mount Airy. Matter of fact, Michael Bolton had put on a show 2 weeks before our visit. Shucks, I missed him and I adore Michael Bolton!

Each pool has their own unique feel (if you ask me) and you can order up beverages and food while enjoying your pool time. There are cabanas that you can enjoy if you want a more intimate setting. On the weekend that we visited, they had a DJ rocking out some great tunes!
Mount Airy Casino Resort in Mount Pocono Pennsylvania
Right in front of Mount Airy you'll find a gorgeous pond (I call it a small lake) and across from that is their on-site 18-hole Championship Golf Course. It's within a short walk from the resort or you can take their shuttle over to the site to enjoy a round of golf. Although I didn't play golf while we were there, I did talk to 2 gentlemen who did. They told me that it's one of their favorite places to play golf in the entire state of Pennsylvania.
Mount Airy Casino Resort in Mount Pocono Pennsylvania
If you don't want to dine out, you can certainly order room service if you're staying overnight. Since we were celebrating our 30th wedding anniversary, we decided to spend one evening in and ordered room service. I enjoyed bbq ribs while my husband enjoyed gourmet chicken. Our food was delivered to our room within 35 minutes of placing our order and arrived piping hot! YUMMY GOOD! My only suggestion about how to improve room service would be to offer additional food selections, including expanding their vegetable menu. Other than that, I have no complaints.
Mount Airy Casino Resort in Mount Pocono Pennsylvania
We thoroughly enjoyed our weekend getaway to Mount Airy Casino Resort in Mt. Pocono Pennsylvania and we already plan on visiting the resort again next spring. It's a great place to stay, eat and play! You can learn more by visiting their website online and by connecting with them on Facebook.

The Butterfly Atrium at Hershey Gardens

The Butterfly Atrium at Hershey Gardens in Pennsylvania
The Butterfly Atrium at Hershey Gardens is one of only twenty-five indoor butterfly atriums in the entire country. It's fun, educational and truly beautiful to see. Since it's indoors, it's open year-round for family fun and houses dozens of rare and common butterflies from Central America, South America, Asia and Africa. Personally, I've never seen so many butterflies in one particular place, until now!

For those of you who are not familiar with the area, you'll find the Butterfly Atrium at Hershey Gardens located on 170 Hotel Road in Hershey Pennsylvania. If you're staying at the Hotel Hershey, it's right down the street and within a short walk. Admission price ranges from $9.00 to $12.50 per person depending on age. Children under the age of 2 are admitted free with a paying adult.
The Butterfly Atrium at Hershey Gardens in Pennsylvania
The Hershey Gardens offers several different family-friendly attractions all one property. You'll find the Hershey Gardens, the Children's Garden, Theme Gardens, the Butterfly House and more! Once you pay your admission, it's good for all of the attractions on their property.

We've been to the Hershey Gardens several times before, but this time around we went to specifically see the new Butterfly Atrium (Butterfly House). We loaded up our two grandchildren into the car and took the short 20 minute drive into Hershey. You'll find free parking located in the parking lot right outside the admission gate.
The Butterfly Atrium at Hershey Gardens in Pennsylvania
Once inside we strolled along the marked paths to view all of the beautiful blooming flowers, bushes, trees and water fountains. This is a self-guided tour, so you and your family can take your leisurely time. If you get tired of walking, don't worry, you'll find plenty of places to sit down and to relax.

After we were done strolling around the outside gardens, we headed inside to check out the Butterfly Atrium and wow...we weren't disappointed at all. You can walk around and get up close to see the butterflies, but please...DO NOT TOUCH THEM! In addition, you'll want to walk around slowly and please watch where you're walking! They fly around at their leisure and you don't want to harm them or spook them in any way.
The Butterfly Atrium at Hershey Gardens in Pennsylvania
We were able to get up close many times to view them and I was amazed at how colorful and beautiful they are. In addition, I took two cameras with me and was able to get some really nice shots of the butterflies up close which I'm sharing in my travel feature today. Aren't they gorgeous? Yes they are!

You can learn more about the Hershey Gardens and their hours of operation by visiting their website online. While there you can read more about each of the attractions that they offer and if you want to save time, you can purchase your admission tickets online.

Family Fun at Adventure Sports in Hershey

Adventure Sports in Hershey Pennsylvania
Adventure Sports in Hershey is a family entertainment park located on 3010 Elizabethtown Road in Hershey Pennsylvania. If you live in south central Pennsylvania or planning a trip to the area, this is one fun place that you'll want to visit.

Adventure Sports has all kinds of fun attractions and activities for the entire family to enjoy. You'll find a beautiful miniature golf course, go-karts, batting cages, outdoor laser tag, bumper boats, an arcade loaded with video games and a golf driving range.
Adventure Sports in Hershey Pennsylvania

We live within a 15 minute drive and visit Adventure Sports at least twice every summer season. When my family visits, we love to play mini golf! This is the best miniature golf course in the Harrisburg and Hershey area, at least in my honest opinion. When we go, we try to visit during their off-peak hours, so that we can take our time playing the game. You'll be charge $6.00 to $7.75 per person, depending on age.
Adventure Sports in Hershey Pennsylvania

Another activity that we all enjoy is their bumper boats! We love to ride around on the bumper boats on sunny and hot days...it's a great way to cool off. When we take the little ones in the family with us, they do ride in the same bumper boat with an adult. You have to be at least 44" tall and they currently charge $7.00 per person for this activity.
Adventure Sports in Hershey Pennsylvania

Adventure Sports in Hershey Pennsylvania

Our third favorite activity is taking a spin around on their Go-Karts which is a lot of fun! You have to be at least 10 years old and stand 58" tall or you'll have to ride with an adult. The Go-Kart track is 1100 feet long with plenty of twist & turns to keep you entertained. You'll pay $7.00 for the driver and $1.00 for the passenger (if you have one) and ONLY two people (max) can ride/drive around in a go-kart.
Adventure Sports in Hershey Pennsylvania
After our family has had our fun...we always stop into their ice cream parlor for an icy-cold treat! They have your classic ice cream flavors along with a few you may have never heard of. You can get your ice cream served in a cone or a dish...or if you're a milkshake person, they have those too! You'll be buying one of the best ice cream brands in our area...Turkey Hill Ice Cream! Need a little hot lunch or dinner? They have that too! You can order chicken fingers, french fries, burgers, etc.
Adventure Sports in Hershey Pennsylvania
We love visiting (and playing) at Adventure Sports in Hershey. Matter of fact, for the past several years, it's been our family's tradition to get together at least twice during the summer months and all go together. It's a lot of fun and everyone always has a good time!

North Wildwood Seawall - The Perfect Place to Take a Beachfront Walk

North Wildwood Seawall in New Jersey
I love visiting the Wildwoods with my favorite area being North Wildwood in New Jersey. Many people don't realize that the Wildwoods is actually an island made up by several coastal communities. You have North Wildwood, Wildwood, West Wildwood, Wildwood Crest and an area called Diamond Beach.

The prettiest places on the entire island to view the Atlantic Ocean (at least in my honest opinion) happens to be in North Wildwood as you walk along (on) the seawall. When we first started going down there on vacation in 2000, this seawall was non-existent. A few years later they added it in and boy...I'm so glad that they did!
North Wildwood Seawall in New Jersey

It's completely paved with cement and it's flat, so it makes for an easy walk. It runs right behind the Hereford Inlet Lighthouse if you're familiar with that particular area. There are some benches along your walking route that you can sit on to take in the beautiful views of the Hereford Inlet and the Atlantic Ocean.

There are two areas on the seawall that have covered seating areas. I call them gazebos and they are relatively close to one another. It's nice to sit under those covered seating areas on blistering hot days to get into the shade or during rainy days when you still want to sit out and watch the ocean waves roll in.
North Wildwood Seawall in New Jersey

If you enjoy sitting down and looking for the dolphins, this is a great area to be in. On the one corner of the seawall you'll find front-row seating and that is usually where we sit when we want to dolphin watch. We can sit there and spot the dolphins swimming by a few times every week, just as long as the surfers aren't in the water when we are there. If the surfers are around, it's much tougher to spot them.

This area of the Wildwoods island has the prettiest scenic views of the water and beaches. In addition, it's a LOT less crowded on this section of the island as compared to Wildwood and Wildwood Crest. Plus, you don't have to walk a mile to reach the water's edge...it's only a few yards away. Great for those of you who want to walk the beach and go shelling too!
North Wildwood Seawall in New Jersey

If you enjoy watching the shorebirds, then this area is great for that too! We often spot Egrets, Cranes, Seagulls and other native birds sitting on the beach or the rocky area that runs along the seawall. If you walk by quietly or sit quietly, you can get up pretty close to them. They do request that you don't toss them any human foods! If you look closely at the photo above (click on it to open it in a new window & in an enlarged size) you can see one of them sitting on the rocks, looking for something to eat.

After you've spent some time here, you can find some local eateries nearby to grab a bite to eat. We like Westy's Irish Pub, Keenan's and a few others that are in the area. You can visit the Hereford Inlet Lighthouse and walk through their beautiful botanical gardens for free. If you want to tour the inside of the lighthouse, you'll have to pay a small admission fee for that.

If you're heading down to Wildwood and looking for the prettiest beachfront walking area, this is definitely the place you want to be!

12 Great Places to Stay While Visiting North Wildwood in New Jersey

12 Great Places to Stay While Visiting North Wildwood in New Jersey
Heading to the Jersey Shore? More particularly, are you heading to the Wildwoods? If so, one of the nicest places to be on the entire Wildwoods islands happens to be North Wildwood, at least in my honest opinion.

We personally love North Wildwood because it's situated on the northern section of the island. It's a slower-paced area, a little bit more quiet and not as crowded as some of the other areas. We also find that lodging accommodations seem to be a lot more affordable in this section and the hotel, motel & resort staff's seem to be a lot friendlier.

Here's our top 12 Great Places to Stay While Visiting North Wildwood in New Jersey.
Aloha Oceanfront Motel in North Wildwood
1. Aloha Oceanfront Motel - When it comes to oceanfront, you can't get any better than the Aloha! We've stayed over 10+ times at this place in the past 16 years and have always enjoyed our stay. The beach is right across the street and you'll get some beautiful views of the ocean from your window (if staying in an oceanfront suite) or if you're sitting on their large sundeck.
Acropolis Oceanfront Resort in North Wildwood
2. Acropolis Oceanfront Resort - This resort sits right across the street to the Aloha. They have an Olympic sized swimming pool, large sundeck and all of their rooms offer views of the ocean. We stayed here one time many years ago and while it was okay, it wasn't one of our favorite places to stay.
Athens II Motor Inn in North Wildwood New Jersey
3. Athens II Motor Inn  -  If you're looking to get some of the best ocean views that Wildwood has to offer, Athens II has to be on the top of your list! They have a heated swimming pool, balconies, hotel rooms, suites and even a penthouse to accommodate large families or groups. It's a tad more expensive than some of the other places on our list, but definitely worth it for the views.
Harbor Light Family Resort in North Wildwood New Jersey
4. Harbor Light Family Resort - This place used to be at the top of our list of places to stay. However, over the past 2-3 years, a lot of families are staying there and partying out on the sundecks & in front of their rooms until 3am in the morning. As you can imagine, it's hard to get a good night's sleep if your staying there during the months of June, July & August. With that said, their staff is super-friendly, the rooms are always extremely clean & they have two swimming pools for you to enjoy.
North Wind Motel in Wildwood New Jersey
5. North Wind Motel - This motel sits right across the street from the one listed above. They offer 2-room efficiency units and 2 bedroom units. They have a nice sized swimming pool. We never stayed here but did tour one of their rooms when my cousin's were down visiting last year. They looked nice from what I could see the few minutes that we were there.
Trylon Motel in Wildwood New Jersey
6. Trylon Motel - A few years ago we stayed at the Trylon and it was an "okay" place but not at the top of our list to stay at again. The week we were there, people were outside partying on the sundecks & in front of their rooms until the wee hours of the morning. In addition, our room was not that clean and the maid-service was terrible in our opinion. They offer a variety of different styled rooms and do have nice ocean views. They have a swimming pool, shuffleboard, etc. all on-site.
Montego Bay Resort in Wildwood New Jersey
7. Montego Bay Resort - We stayed here twice and really enjoyed this place! We had a gorgeous 3-bedroom suit with hot tub. Our balcony gave us beautiful views of the Atlantic Ocean.
