Boardwalk at Surf Avenue Historical Marker in North Wildwood

Boardwalk at Surf Avenue Historical Marker in North Wildwood New Jersey

Historical markers can be found in all 50 states and contain important information about our country's history. Some of the history displayed on these markers are national while other's point out local historical facts. Every time we travel, especially when on a road trip we seek out these markers and document the ones that we find as part of our waymarking records.

A few months ago we stumbled upon the Boardwalk at Surf Avenue historical marker in North Wildwood, New Jersey. Here's the information on it.

Borough of Anglesea 1885-1906

Boardwalk

In February 1904 Borough Council authorized construction of a Boardwalk on Surf Avenue from this point to the Borough's southern border. It was removed just 8 years later due to the rapidly expanding beach, and a new Boardwalk was built closer to the ocean. Although a number of smaller Boardwalks had been built previously, the 1904 Boardwalk was the first to connect with its counterpart in Wildwood Borough.

If you would like to photograph it for your waymarking records you'll find temporary sidestreet parking. It's located right along Surf Avenue heading east towards the Atlantic Ocean. You'll find at least a dozen other historical markers on the island...many of which we've documented over the years on our travel blog. You can find them HERE

The Historic Warwick Hotel in Hummelstown

The Historic Warwick Hotel in Hummelstown, Pennsylvania

The historic Warwick Hotel located on 12 West Main Street in Hummelstown got its start in the early 1800's and was known as the Cross Keys Hotel, and later, as the Mansion House Hotel, and Baum's Hotel, and in 1889 as the Grand Central Hotel. In 1927 it was known as the Central Hotel, and by 1945 as the Hotel Warwick.

With the addition of the mansard roof prior to 1911, the three-story brick building became a fine example of the Second Empire style. Numerous additions to the rear and interior renovations were performed over the years. The Warwick is presently the only remaining hotel in Hummelstown.

You can learn all about the historic Hotels of Hummelstown by reading the historical marker located right beside the Arch and Town Clock. If you go back to the early 1900's there were two additional hotels nearby called the National Hotel (located on Railroad and 2nd Streets) and the Keystone Hotel (located on 40 East Main Street) all in the Hummelstown borough.

Etched onto the marker are three old photographs of what each hotel looked like back in those days along with some historical information about each one. It's an interesting read and will only take about 5 minutes of your time.

Hotels and taversn have a long standing presence in Hummelstown. For Hummelstown, a town along stagecoach routes and the Union Canal, railroads, and later, roads...the provision of facilities for travelers was an active business. The ONLY remaining building that is still used as a hotel today is the Warwick Hotel.  Plus, their on-site restaurant offers some of the best food in the area.

At the very bottom of the plaque it states that the plaque was donated by J.D. Mathers, owner of the Warwick Hotel, in honor of Derien and Derek,

Bell's Philly Grill in North Wildwood, New Jersey

We've driven by Bell's Philly Grill a few times in the past 2 years and finally had the opportunity to stop in to order a late lunch. (take-out). We ordered a Philly Cheeseteak, a Chicken Cheesesteak, 2 orders of French Fries and Soda's to go.

As we were standing there placing our orders we were told to ignore all prices printed on the paper menu or posted on their menu board. A female employee informed us that prices had recently went up and they hadn't had time to change them. There would be a $1.50 per sandwich upcharge! We placed our to-go order and sat down at a table to wait.

It took them about 25 minutes to get it done. Called up to the counter to collect our bag and to pay for our order. At that time we assumed our order was correct since we didn't order anything complicated. We left and went back to our hotel room to sit down for dinner.

Well, our order was totally messed up. We received the wrong sandwiches, no condiments for our French Fries (we requested Ketchup) and one beverage was incorrect too. We were really disappointed and frankly, the sandwiches that we did receive were nothing to brag about. If we would of had more time that night we would of driven back down there to return the food and to complain.

I'm sure that a lot of people love Bell's Philly Grill but our first experience dining there was a big disappointment. I'm not sure if we'll try them again or not. With that said, we wanted to share our experience with the restaurant with those who read our travel blog.

Major Andre Historical Marker in Cumberland County

Over the last 11 years we've been following the Pennsylvania Historical Marker Trail all through our great state and documenting them on the blog. Millions of people walk or drive by these markers every year and never give them a second thought. They're a great source of historic information and we're trying to bring some much needed attention to them.

While following the Historical Marker Trail through Cumberland County and came across the Major Andre' historical marker located in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. You'll find it located on South Hanover Street. You can pull over to the side of the road and get a photograph for your waymarking records.
