Hiking at Boyd Big Tree Preserve Conservation Area in Dauphin County

Boyd Big Tree Preserve Conservation Area in Dauphin County Pennsylvania
The Boyd Big Tree Preserve Conservation Area is located in Dauphin County, between the city of Harrisburg and Dauphin in Pennsylvania. From US 322, take the Fishing Creek exit. Turn east onto Fishing Creek Valley Road and travel approximately 2.6 miles. You'll find it located on the right. The park is open every day from sunrise to sunset.
Boyd Big Tree Preserve Conservation Area in Dauphin County Pennsylvania

To enter the park you'll turn in at the main entrance and travel up a paved and curvy road to arrive at the paved and unpaved parking lot. There are plenty of parking spaces. If you're handicap, I recommend parking close to the picnic pavilion, where you'll find both steps and a path leading up to the picnic pavilion, public restrooms and the hiking trails. The trails are not really handicap accessible in my opinion.

The 1,025 acre Boyd Big Tree Preserve Conservation Area is part of Blue Mountain and is habitat  for large trees, deep forest birds, small mammals, deer, red tail fox, bears, snakes, turkey, grouse, butterflies, etc. During the summer and fall months the field is filled with blooming wildflowers. In late-July and early-August, the flowers attract field birds and many varieties of butterflies. The road leading up to the parking lot and surrounding the parking lot contains Eastern Bluebird nesting boxes.

There are 12 miles of trails for you to enjoy and are perfect for almost any level of hiking enthusiast. There are easy trails, moderate and difficult trails for you to choose from. There is a park map with all of the trails listed on it that you can grab at the entrance. In total there are 8 trails and I recommend that you wear comfortable walking shoes, dress appropriately for the season, carry along bottled water & snacks, wear sunscreen and bring along bug spray!
Boyd Big Tree Preserve Conservation Area in Dauphin County Pennsylvania

We spent approximately 2 hours walking a few of the easy to moderate hiking trails at the preserve. We enjoyed the East Loop Trail, Pond Loop Trail, and Lower Spring Trail. They're great trails for those who want to enjoy an easier walk. We were in the shade and deep forest area for the majority of our hike, but at certain areas the bugs got pretty bad. Hence, why we recommend that you bring along bug spray.

On the property located near the entrance you'll find a covered picnic pavilion that you can use. You'll have to bring along your own picnic-style lunch. There are no grills or cooking facilities. Nearby you'll find a public restroom and a water fountain where you can refill your water bottles. Please clean up all trash and items that you bring with you to the park.

Throughout the year they offer a wide variety of environmental education and interpretive programs. Through hands-on activities, guided walks and evening programs, you can gain appreciation, understanding, and develop a sense of stewardship toward natural and cultural resources. If you're interested in these programs you'll want to contact the Little Buffalo State Park Complex Office at 717-567-9255 or check them out online at VisitPAparks.com.

The land was donated to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania by Mr. Alexander Boyd (1925-2013). The stated purpose of his donation was to set aside the area for the perpetual management and protection of big trees. He received a Conservation Landowner of the Year award in 2001 from the Pennsylvania Wildlife Federation and Audubon Society for his donation of this beautiful conservation area.

You can visit the Boyd Big Tree Preserve Conservation Area year-round, from dawn to dusk. Dogs are permitted in the park and on the trails as long as they remain on a leash. Alcohol and drugs are not permitted. Hunting and trapping during hunting season is permitted and they recommend that you stay on the trails, and wear orange colored clothing during hunting season. You're not permitted to feed wildlife and always observe wildlife from afar.

After you're done hiking for the day head on over to the Chestnut Tree Plantation area to learn about the American Chestnut Trees, blight and the current restoration project that is going on. You'll find the plantation area right in front of the parking lot with a fence running around it. There is an information board sitting in front of it where you can learn more about it.

We had a great time visiting the park and will definitely be planning another visit. The next time we want to bring along a picnic-style lunch, binoculars and other items, so that we can hike some of the longer and more difficult walking trails. If you enjoy being out in nature, we highly recommend that pay the Body Big Tree Preserve Conservation Area a visit.

Spending the Day in Beautiful Cape May

Welcome to Cape May in New Jersey
I was 7 years old the first time that I visited the south Jersey Shore and I've been visiting the area at least twice a year ever since. When we go on vacation we enjoy staying in North Wildwood, New Jersey and then drive down to Cape May to spend the day. It's only a 12-15 minute drive and we take the scenic route down along the coast.

On a recent day trip to Cape May we enjoyed many different things. We spent a total of 7 hours there and here are a few of the things that we saw or experienced while we were there.
Beautiful Highbee Beach in Cape May, New Jersey

Horseshoe Crab Conservation on Highbee Beach in Cape May, New Jersey

Highbee Beach - If you're looking for a free and non-crowded beach you'll want to drive down to Higbee Beach, located right beside Sunset Beach. There is a free parking lot right out front and no beach tags are required. This is a non-protected beach...meaning that there are no lifeguards on duty. Bring your own chairs and towels. When you want something to eat or need to use the restroom, you can walk next door to Sunset Beach for those facilities.

Our family spent a good 3 hours enjoying Higbee Beach and had a wonderful time. There were no crowds and we had plenty of room to stretch out. While we were there...we learned about horseshoe crab conservation from a wildlife ranger who taught us how to put the horseshoe crabs back out into the water if we found them washed up on the beach.. All of the ones we found that day were still alive and just needed to be turned upright (they were flipped upside down) and returned back into the water.
World War II Lookout Fire Tower in Cape May, New Jersey

World War II Lookout Fire Tower in Cape May, New Jersey

World War II Lookout Fire Tower - is located officially at Sunset Beach and was just a 4-5 minute walk from Higbee Beach. We walked up to the tower and strolled around the grounds. There are information plaques around the tower that will give you the history on it and the importance that it played during World War II.

We had a few family members along with us who never been inside the tower (the museum portion) or climbed the steps to the top. Several of them paid the admission fee and made their way inside. They spent about 20 minutes viewing the photographs and climbing the steps to the top where they were treated to some incredible views of the surrounding area.
Shopping at the Washington Street Mall in Cape May, New Jersey

Shopping at the Washington Street Mall in Cape May, New Jersey

Washington Street Mall - If you're looking to do some shopping while visiting Cape May, you'll want to head to the Washington Street Mall. You'll find oodles of different restaurants, cafes, gift shops, boutiques, candy stores, etc. All of the shops are small business owned...you won't find any big chain stores here!!!

There are paid (metered) parking around the mall and during the summer season it can be hard to find a parking space. I recommend that you seek out one of the nearby paid (parking lots) and go there instead of driving around for an hour looking for a single parking space. This is an outdoor shopping mall, so you'll want to dress appropriate for the season and wear comfortable walking shoes.
Cape May Miniature Mini Golf in New Jersey

Cape May Miniature Mini Golf in New Jersey

Cape May Miniature Golf - Our family loves playing mini golf and every time we travel we find a place to play. There are 3-4 mini golf courses located in Cape May, but this one is our favorite! It's an 18-hole course that is beautifully landscaped with some water features. They can get really crowded during the weekends (especially during prime time evening hours), so I recommend visiting during a weekday or early in the day on a weekend and parking is FREE!
Oyster Bay Restaurant and Bar in Cape May, New Jersey

Oyster Bay Restaurant and Bar - We love seafood and when visiting the area we enjoy dining at the Oyster Bay Restaurant & Bar. They can get very crowded so you'll want to call ahead to make a reservation (if you can) or visit during the non-prime time hours. I consider them to be a casual, fine-dining restaurant and be prepared, they're not cheap...however, their food is delicious and they definitely has the best seafood in Cape May.

We had a great time spending the day down in Cape May and are looking forward to returning again next year. If you plan on just spending the day...I recommend allowing at least 6 hours in your schedule and that will depend on the activities that you want to enjoy.

What makes the Cocoa Diner special is that it's open 24 hours a day and offers a really nice breakfast, lunch and dinner menu. We stopped in for an early dinner after spending the day at Hersheypark and visiting Hershey Chocolate World.

The Cocoa Diner in Hummelstown, Pennsylvania

On the day that we visited my husband enjoyed a cheeseburger with french fries and I enjoyed one of their baked ham steaks with a side order of veggies. We were seated immediately and our order arrived at our table about 25 minutes later. Everything that we ordered was cooked perfectly and arrived onto the table hot. Our server was helpful in answering any questions that we had, was friendly to talk with and made sure my husband got a beverage refill when he needed one.

Everything that we ordered was delicious! I was really surprised because we have driven by this diner numerous times over the past 3 years, but had never stopped in until recently. Their food was really good, better than expected and we really appreciate their affordable prices. We would definitely eat here again! You can learn more about the Cocoa Diner by visiting their website online.

The Historic Dellville Covered Bridge in Perry County

Dellville Covered Bridge in Perry County Pennsylvania
The historic Dellville Covered Bridge was built in 1889 and was located in Dellville, Perry County, Pennsylvania. The bridge was a three-span covered bridge measuring 174 feet long. The Burr Truss Bridge spans across Sherman's Creek and was painted in the traditional barn red color accented with white. The roof was painted black. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.

Back in November 2014 the bridge was burned down thanks to arsonists. Residents who live in the area were devastated by the news and were inconvenienced by its loss. Despite the fire, the remains are still standing today. From what I read online, the police are still looking for the arsonists and are offering a cash reward for information.
Dellville Covered Bridge in Perry County Pennsylvania

Perry County has been issuing requests for bids to rebuild the historic covered bridge and are currently accepting donations to the new bridge building project. You can contact the Perry County Historical Society for additional information and to make a monetary donation.

Photographs in our blog post today show you how the Dellville Covered Bridge looked in 2004 and then its charred remains in 2016. Let's all hope that the county can raise the money needed to have it rebuilt again. If it gets rebuilt, we'll be sure to update this post.

Spending the Day at Higbee Beach in Cape May

Higbee Beach in Cape May New Jersey
Higbee Beach is one of the most family-friendly beaches in Cape May, New Jersey. Matter of fact, if you want to avoid buying beach tags on the regular Cape May beaches, you'll want to spend the day on Sunset Beach or Higbee Beach, no beach tags required!

Every time we visit Cape May we like to take the grandchildren over to Higbee Beach for the day. If you're unfamiliar with the area...follow all of the signs to Sunset Beach and park in the Sunset Beach parking lot. Sunset Beach is to your left and Higbee Beach is to your right. You'll follow the marked path down to the beach.

Things to do while there? Well, there's plenty! You can hang out on the beach all day long to sunbathe and play in the water. You can comb the beach looking for seashells and those famous Cape May Diamonds which are plentiful in this area. You can watch the Cape May and Lewes Ferry cross the bay and watch all of the dolphin & whale watching boats right off the shoreline.

You can head on over to Sunset Beach and shop in their 3 on-site gift shops, watch the evening flag ceremony, check out the Atlantus Concrete Sunken Ship (sits right offshore), tour the World War II Lookout Tower and/or take in a game of miniature golf. In our honest opinion, Sunset Beach Mini Golf is the best in the area!!!

When it comes to playing mini golf in the Harrisburg area, The Meadows Mini Golf is our favorite place to play. It's an 18-hole course that is beautifully landscaped and most of the holes are handicap accessible. You'll find free on-site parking right out front. Depending on the time of the day that you arrive, you'll pay your admission fee right at the little club house at the entrance or you may have to walk inside of the frozen custard shop to pay your admission.

The miniature golf course is built on a hillside which is really cool. As you go along you'll see a few pretty water fountains with pond features and a rolling man-made stream. It's laid out really nicely and is an easy walk for just about anyone. All of the holes are clearly marked which was really nice too.

On the day that we visited we had 3 players in our party and they weren't overly busy. From start to finish...it took us about an hour to play. With that said, we took our leisurely time, so you could get through the course quicker (on a non-busy day) if you wanted to. We have played there before and when they're busy, it can take you 90-minutes to play all 18 holes.

Seaport Aquarium in Wildwood New Jersey

10 to 12 years ago we visited this aquarium for the first time and weren't really impressed with it. Over the years...we've just avoided it. However, we heard that over the past 3-4 years that they really worked on improvements to their facility and added some new animal species to their collection. That peaked our interest for a return visit.

Admission Rates:

Adults-$8.95
Children(8 and under)- $6.95
Infants 2 and under- FREE
* They offer military discounts
Call (609) 522-0373 for additional information
Seaport Aquarium in Wildwood New Jersey

As we were paying our admission to enter the aquarium they had a real Python outside and were letting visitors pet the snake, while giving them some information about Pythons and their facility. At first...my little granddaughter was afraid of the snake, but the handler (staff) really reassured her that it was perfectly safe to pet it. The staff is really knowledgeable and patient with kids! Thankful for that!

Once inside you'll find a wide variety of animals on display. We saw all kinds of different tropical fish in beautifully set-up aquariums, turtles, sharks and other marine life. There is a "touch tank" where you can stick your hands into the water and touch the fish which was really cool.
Seaport Aquarium in Wildwood New Jersey

There are over 16,000 gallons of fish on display with fresh & saltwater species from around the world. You can visit their 6,000 gallon coral reef exhibit that houses the most beautiful & exotic species in the ocean. There are hundreds of different fish to see including: puffer fish, lion fish, piranhas, clownfish, sharks, koi, triggers, tangs and more! You won't be disappointed with what you see.

My husband is a huge reptile fan and was impressed with their reptile collection. He enjoyed seeing the Leopard Gecko, Black & White Tegu, Blue Tongue Skink, various lizards, snakes, etc. His favorite to see were the two large alligators named Wally and Brutus.
Visiting the Seaport Aquarium in Wildwood

What was my favorite animal to see? Hands down...my favorite was the pair of Coatimundi. I believe they're sisters named Thelma and Louise! They're absolutely adorable! You can tell that these two are playful and enjoy one another's company. I could stand there and watch them for hours!

The next time your down to the Jersey Shore, make sure you stop in and visit. If you haven't visited them in awhile, trust me...they have greatly improved! We will be visiting them every time we're down in the Wildwood area. The Seaport Aquarium is really active on their Facebook page and post updates almost daily. You can connect with them on Facebook for updates, specials, etc.
