Navesink Twin Lights Lighthouse in New Jersey

The historic Navesink Twin Lights Lighthouse is located in Highlands, New Jersey overlooking Sandy Hook Bay. If you're unfamiliar with the area, the bay serves as the entrance to New York Harbor and the beautiful Atlantic Ocean.

It was built in 1862 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The lighthouse was first automated in 1949 with the north tower being deactivated in 1898 and the south tower being deactivated in 1952. The north tower was then re-lit in 1962.

As the name suggests, the Twin Lights are a set of beacons located 246 feet above sea level on the headlands. This lighthouse was an important navigational landmark and guide for ships that were navigating the entrance to New York Harbor. Back in the day, one of the towers emitted a flashing light and the other one a steady light.
Navesink Twin Lights Lighthouse in New Jersey

In 1962 the property was turned over to the state of New Jersey. Over the years the lighthouse has been updated and maintained by the state. The north tower is used as a private aid to navigation and remains active today. The lighthouse is part of the New Jersey Coastal Heritage Trail Route. During the 3rd weekend in October of every year, it participates in the annual New Jersey Lighthouse Challenge.

Visitors are welcome to visit the Navesink Twin Lights Lighthouse to visit the lighthouse, museum and on-site gift shop. You can visit their official website for their hours of operation, driving directions, news and events. They're always changing, so I suggest visiting their website before planning your visit.

Cool Scoops Ice Cream Parlor in Wildwood

Cool Scoops Ice Cream Parlor in Wildwood, New Jersey
Three years ago we stumbled upon the Cool Scoops Ice Cream Parlor in Wildwood, New Jersey and it has quickly become our favorite ice cream shop at the Jersey Shore. They have some of the best ice cream cones, sundaes, milkshakes and banana splits in the entire state! They were featured on the Travel Channel a few years ago as a place to visit.

As soon as you pull into the parking lot you'll see that this ain't no ordinary ice cream parlor. It is totally decked out in a 1950's theme inside and out! If you would like to see some photographs of the inside and learn more about the type's of items that they serve, I invite you to read our previous feature on Cool Scoops right here on our travel blog.
Cool Scoops Ice Cream Parlor in Wildwood, New Jersey

Today we wanted to highlight them again, but this time we're focusing on their beautiful wall murals that are painted on the outside walls of their buildings. The wall murals were painted by MG Signs, a New Jersey company that has done hundreds of outdoor wall murals up and down the coast. We've documented many of their wall murals over the years and you can find some of them on the blog by visiting our Street Art section.

The wall murals are done in a 1950's theme which we just love! The waitresses are wearing roller skates with the guys wearing saddle shoes! The type of scenes you would see when you would of pulled into a 1950's drive-in restaurant. The artistic murals coordinate with their inside decor and the color scheme is typical of what you would of seen during the 1950's.

Each mural is life-size and quite large in size. Aren't they fun? They are so eye catching when you're driving by and definitely worth a look-see if you're visiting the Wildwoods island. Yes, Wildwood is a barrier island off the southern New Jersey coast! Plus, you'll find that they have the BEST hand-dipped ice cream in the state!

Myers Farms Farmer's Market in Goshen New Jersey

Myers Farms Farmer's Market in Goshen New Jersey
Heading to the south New Jersey Shore? If so, you'll want to check out some of the local Farmer's Markets on your way there! You'll find many of them if you're taking route 9, route 55 or route 47 to the south Jersey Shore points like Avalon, Stone Harbor, Wildwood and Cape May.

We go down to Wildwood several times a year and find it a LOT better to buy our fresh produce from one of the local farm stands on our way down. Trust me, the fresh produce that you find at these farm stands is a lot fresher and better then the stuff that you find at the local grocery stores down there. Plus, a lot of the times it's even cheaper!
Myers Farms Farmer's Market in Goshen New Jersey

Myers Farms Farmer's Market in Goshen New Jersey

One of our favorite places to stop at is called Myers Farms which is located at 425 Route 47 North in Goshen, New Jersey. If your heading down route 47, you'll find them located on the right side of the road. They have signage out and a large parking lot for you to pull into.

When shopping there you'll find a lot of your current in-season fruits and vegetables there. We always find their prices to be great. We like to buy our lettuce, tomatoes, potatoes, peaches, grapes, plums, bananas, watermelons, etc. there. Of course, it will depend on the season on what they have to offer, but everything we have ever purchased was great!
Myers Farms Farmer's Market in Goshen New Jersey

The pictures that I'm featuring in my blog post today were taken by us when we were down to the Jersey Shore in October 2017. Hence, why you'll see all of the pumpkins, cornstalks and other fall items in the photos. On the day that we were there...my grandchildren ran through their corn maze for free and they gave each child their own little pumpkin when they were finished.

There are a few of these fruit & vegetable stands along route 47 as you head south down to the Jersey Shore, but Myers Farms is one of our favorites. They offer a great variety of fresh produce items and their prices are really reasonable for what you're getting. If this is one of the routes that you take, we highly recommend that you stop in to pick up some fresh goodies while traveling through.

Tommy's Pizza - The Best Pizza in Gettysburg

Tommy's Pizza - The Best Pizza in Gettysburg
We love to take weekend getaways and we try to visit Gettysburg a few times every year. Like most tourist-towns, you'll find gobs and gobs of places to eat. Gettysburg is no exception! You'll find fine dining, casual dining, fast food, pizza parlors, cafes, ice cream shops, candy stores, coffee shops and more!

Like most people in this world, we love pizza and every time we visit Gettysburg we make sure that we stop into Tommy's Pizza located at 105 Steinwehr Avenue who has the best pizza in town. At least, in our personal opinion, Tommy's has the best pizza!
Tommy's Pizza - The Best Pizza in Gettysburg

Tommy's pizza serves up all kinds of different homemade pizzas. One of our favorites to get is the Veggie Pizza. In addition to the pizza, they offer chicken wings (we love their BBQ wings), homemade subs, french fries, onion rings, mozzarella sticks, chicken fingers, stromboli, gyro's, various salads and more.

In regards to pricing, we feel that almost all of their offerings are competitively priced. With that said, you will pay MORE for a pizza from Tommy's than what you will pay from a franchise store. However, we feel that it's worth the extra price because it's really good....REALLY, REALLY... GOOD!
Tommy's Pizza - The Best Pizza in Gettysburg

They offer FREE parking in their parking lot for patrons or you can hit up one of the parking meters out front, should their parking lot be full. You can dine-in or order take-out. We have dined in and have ordered takeout with great results! Our food is always made-to-order and our hot items are piping hot and our cold items are cold.

Family Fun at Morey's Piers Amusement Park in Wildwood

Morey's Piers and Water Parks in Wildwood, New Jersey
Morey's Piers and Beachfront Water Parks are located directly on the beach in Wildwood, New Jersey. When you visit Morey's Piers you will find three large wooden piers filled with amusement park rides, fun carnival style games and two fun-filled water parks for you and your family to enjoy.

Morey's Piers is a family owned and operated seaside park that spans over 18 acres along six beach blocks. What's really nice is that all three of the amusement piers are within walking distance from one another. You can play on one, two or all three of them in a single day.
Morey's Piers and Water Parks in Wildwood, New Jersey

Morey's Piers and Water Parks in Wildwood, New Jersey

When our family visits the park we make an entire day of it. Since we'll be spending several hours there, we opt to buy the all-you-can ride wristband. However, you can also opt to just buy tickets and pay as you go. Frankly though, if your kids are going to be getting on at least 10+ amusement rides, you'll probably save money by purchasing the wristbands.

There are all kinds of different rides for you and the family to enjoy. There are "water" rides where you'll get a little wet, dry rides, roller coasters, kiddie rides and everything in between. When getting on the rides you want to dress appropriately and wear comfortable shoes. Don't be dragging shopping bags and other items with you onto the rides.
Morey's Piers and Water Parks in Wildwood, New Jersey

All of the amusement rides are broken down into 3 different categories:

* High Thrill Rides - High speeds with extremely unusual & stressful physical forces. This ride contains startling & unexpected thrills appropriate for ONLY the most healthy & physically able riders.

* Moderate Thrill Rides - Moderate speeds with unexpected movements & stressful physical forces. This ride may contain unanticipated thrills.

* Mild Thrill Rides - Low speeds with expected movements and anticipated thrills.
Morey's Piers and Water Parks in Wildwood, New Jersey

Morey's Piers and Water Parks in Wildwood, New Jersey

I recommend that you write down your child's name, your name and your cellphone number onto a piece of paper & slip it into your child's pocket. This way if they get separated from you, they can be identified and you'll be contacted. We all hope that this never happens, but it does! It's a good time to have a "safety" talk with your child(ren) on what to do if they do become separated from you. Being prepared is the smart thing to do!

There are two different water parks with one of them located on the Surfside Pier at 25th Avenue and the Boardwalk and the second one is called Raging Waters located at Mariner's Pier at Schellenger Avenue and the Boardwalk. These water parks have separate admission charges!!! You can buy admission just into the water park or purchase combo tickets to save to a little bit of money.
Morey's Piers and Water Parks in Wildwood, New Jersey

Morey's Piers and Water Parks in Wildwood, New Jersey

During the weekends and holidays, Morey's gets really busy so I suggest that you plan ahead. You may want to try to visit during the "off peak" hours during the day when a lot of people are over on the beach, as compared to visiting during the evening hours and/or weekend hours.

On the piers you'll find various carnival style games that you can play. In my personal opinion, play them AFTER you're done riding for the day. It can be a real pain in the butt to drag around those stuffed animals while you're trying to get on rides and while standing in lines. Of course, this is entirely up to you.
Morey's Piers and Water Parks in Wildwood, New Jersey

Every time we visit the Jersey Shore (Avalon, Stone Harbor, Wildwood or Cape May), we always plan a family fun visit to Morey's Piers Amusement Park. It's great fun for the entire family and has become a family tradition every time we travel down to the shore!

The Harrisburg City Historical Marker

Over the past 7 years we've been documenting the historical markers that we come across while traveling across the great state of Pennsylvania. Millions of people drive by them or walk by them every day and don't give them a second look. When was the last time you stopped to read one? These historical markers are an important part of our state's history.

This particular Harrisburg City Historical Marker (there are several of them that lead into the city), is located across the street from Reservoir Park on State Street, on the left when traveling east or on the right when traveling west. This street is a heavily traveled thoroughfare, so you'll want to pull off the road and into the laundromat's parking lot, if you want to get a decent photograph of the marker.
Harrisburg City Historical Marker in Pennsylvania

Harrisburg Historical Marker reads as follows:

Pennsylvania's capital since 1812. As Harris' Ferry, was settled a century before by John Harris Sr. Laid out as a town in 1785 by John Harris Jr. For over 200 years a center of travel, trade and historic events.

By: 1946 by Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission.

This historical marker is quite old and really should be updated (remodeled) or replaced. It's peeling of the paint, has a lot of "dings" and was tilted in its appearance. If they replace it and update it, perhaps passerby's will take notice of it. You really need to get up close to read it due to the faded colors and peeling paint.

If you're waymarking and documenting historical markers throughout the state of Pennsylvania, you'll find a lot of them documented right here on our blog under the Historical Markers section. You can double-click on our photograph to have it open up in a new browsing window and in an enlarged size, so that you can see the details.

7 Tips for Collecting Seashells While on Vacation

7 Tips for Collecting Seashells While on Vacation
When I was 5 years old I visited the beach for the first time during a family vacation. During that summer vacation I fell in-love with collecting seashells. I'm now 51 years old and currently have over 400+ shells from all over the world in my collection.

Collecting seashells is a fun hobby and won't cost you a lot of money. You'll need just a few basic supplies and then you can hit your favorite beach. Going SHELLING has become more and more popular over the years and seashell collecting continues to grow.

7 Tips for Collecting Seashells While on Vacation

1. Collector's ID Guide: If you're serious about collecting shells I recommend picking up a collector's ID guidebook to help you identify them. I personally recommend the The BEST North American Seashell Identification Guide if you're traveling around North America.

2. Collection Bags: You'll need a few mesh (netted) bags to place them in while walking the beach. These types of bags allow the sand to fall out and the water to flow through. Once they're in the bag you can rinse them in the surf or rinse them once you return back to your hotel room.

3. Collecting Gear: In addition to the bags I recommend that you take along a small shovel and a strainer. You'll need the shovel for digging into the sand and the strainer is helpful when you're collecting the small shells for your collection. You can scoop them up and let the sand & water flow out.
7 Tips for Collecting Seashells While on Vacation

4. Know Where to Look: Some shells are best found around rocky areas, in low-tide pools, along the low tide or high tide lines, in marshy bays, etc. Some will be easily visible and other's will need to be dug up from the sand. You can find out information on where to look via ID guides, online shelling websites and/or talk to the locals.

5. Transportation Materials: You will need to transport your newly found treasures home. I recommend packing them into boxes, old pillowcases, sticking them into old socks, wrap them in your beach towels, use bubble wrap, paper towels, etc. Never wrap them in newspaper (the ink will transfer onto your shells).

6. Cleaning: Once you get home you'll want to thoroughly clean-up your treasures! Wash them in warm soapy water and rinse clean. If they have debris on them...lightly scrub them with a soft sponge. Don't use steel wool which will scratch them. It's important to remove the salt water, sand and fishy odor from all shells before storing or displaying them. You can find detailed steps and tips on how to wash and preserve your seashells by checking out a previous article that I published.
7 Tips for Collecting Seashells While on Vacation

7. Display: You will need to decide how you wish to display your collection. You can find display cases and boxes out in the retail marketplace or make your own. If you're only going to collect a few shells, you can just display them around your home as decor accent pieces. If you're going to place them in cases and/or boxes...I recommend labeling them with the name of the shell, collection location and the date.

Collecting seashells while on vacation is a fun activity to do and it won't cost you any money. Once you arrive back home you'll have some beautiful treasures to display around your home to remind you of your trip.

How Clean is the Air Inside of Airports

How Clean is the Air Inside of Airports
Do you visit airports while traveling, or maybe work in an airport? If so, you're not alone, as tens of millions of people worldwide enter and spend time in airports every year.

This past November, MDPI, a publisher of peer-reviewed, scientific and technical journals, published the findings from a study, monitoring the indoor air quality within airport terminals. Although the publication of this study, is new, the findings are not isolated, nor coincidental.

A separate study released back in 2006 tracked occupational exposure in airport personnel. This latest study specifically deals with HVAC systems along with their embedded filtration and how effective it takes care of the outdoor air coming indoors.

Here is an excerpt from the recent study's abstract:

The HVAC system's performance appears, therefore, efficient in terms of filtration, following CDC-NIOSH definition, but it seems not able to provide an air cleaning (i.e., gases and vapors removal) sufficient to respond to solicitation deriving from anthropic activity in the area. Areas investigated, in fact, are characterized not only by passengers' flow but, in the case of the departures area, by commercial and food-preparing activities, such as coffee bars and restaurants.

”As widely documented, food preparation may be regarded as a major source of airborne contamination in indoor (not industrial) environments, in particular of VOCs and particulate matter.”

Overlooked, yet common source of indoor air pollution
One aspect not mentioned is that people themselves are a major source of air contamination. With that said, think of the number of people traveling through an airport in a single day.
How Clean is the Air Inside of Airports

IAQ control

Ventilation does not have the ability to sufficiently control the indoor air quality in all indoor environments. Any airborne contaminants produced indoors, i.e.; contaminants produced by people, products, materials, or processes will only successfully be captured by a dedicated indoor air filtration system.

Certain types of industrial strength air cleaners/air purifiers can house several different filtration systems (particle/gases) and filter types to capture all sized air particles, including PM10, PM2.5, and PM1. We see a definitive and mutual relationship between an HVAC system and standalone air filtration systems (cleaners). Certain types of gases, like CO2, are more difficult to reduce without adequate airflow from the ventilation system.

More airports have started strategically implementing stand-alone air cleaners within their premises; especially in high traffic areas.

Chocolate Workers Sit-Down Strike Historical Marker in Hershey

Over the past 7 years we've been following the Pennsylvania Historical Marker Trail all through our great state and documenting the markers here on the blog. Millions of people walk or drive by these historical markers every year and never give them a second thought. They're a great source of historic information and we're trying to bring some much needed attention to them.

We were following the Historic Marker Trail and came across the Chocolate Workers' Sit-Down Strike Historical Marker in downtown Hershey. If you're waymarking, you'll find it located at the intersection of Cocoa Ave. and Caracas Ave., right beside the Hershey Theatre. If you're looking to photograph it, I recommend pulling into the theatre's parking lot and walking around the side of the building.
Chocolate Workers Sit-Down Strike Historical Marker in Hershey

Marker Information:

Hershey's Chocolate Workers Local 1 (CIO) responded to a labor-management impasse on April 2, 1937 by initiating the first sit-down strike in Pennsylvania and in the confectionery industry. The strike was ended by strike-breaking violence and government mediation. The union lost two subsequent representative elections. In 1939 workers affiliated with the Bakery & Confectionery Workers Local 464 (AFL).

By: 2005 by Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission.

If you would like to learn more about this marker and Pennsylvania history, we recommend that you visit ExplorePAHistory.com. Really interesting reading regarding the strike and how it finally ended. If you're interested in following the Pennsylvania Historical Marker Trail and learning more...you can check out our Historical Markers section right here on the blog.

Visiting Voyageurs National Park in Minnesota

Voyageurs National Park in Minnesota
Voyageurs National Park is a United States National Park that is located in the beautiful state of Minnesota. The park was established in 1975 and is known for its water resources that are popular with fishermen, boaters, campers and hikers. The Kabetogama Peninsula, which lies entirely within the park and makes up most of its land area, is accessible only by boat.

The park is open year-round and offers something different depending on the season. During the warmer months visitors can enjoy boating, swimming, camping, fishing and hiking. During the colder months visitors can enjoy snowmobiling, ice fishing, snowshoeing, cross country skiing, sledding and ice skating in certain areas.
Voyageurs National Park at Kettle Falls in Minnesota

Voyageurs National Park in Minnesota

Around the park you'll find 3 visitor centers and we recommend that you start your visit there if you're new to the area. We visited the Kabetogama Lake Visitor's Center during our trip where we obtained a map and information on the area.

* Ash River - open seasonally, May through September
* Kabetogama Lake - open seasonally, May through September
* Rainy Lake - open year round

International Falls in Minnesota is the largest city near the park. Unlike other parks, Voyageurs National Park is mainly accessible via boat. You'll need to bring along your own boat, rent one while there or sign-up for a guided boat tour by park rangers.
Voyageurs National Park in Minnesota

You'll find campsites that are managed by the National Park Service throughout the park and in designated areas. If you're staying along the periphery of the park you'll find privately owned campsites and cabins that can be rented by visitors. What we found to be really cool is that there are houseboat campsites within the park...so bring along your houseboat or rent one while there. That would make for really cool overnight accommodations.

Visitors can explore the park by kayak, canoe, houseboat, rowboat and by motorboat. The park has rental boats available to visitors or if you prefer...you can try out one of the ranger-led boat tours or a boat shuttle service that will take you to the interior portion of the park.
Voyageurs National Park in Minnesota

Activities that you can enjoy while visiting include hiking, walking trails, swimming, boating and fishing. If you enjoy fishing you'll find northern pike, crappies, walleye, bass, trout, lake whitefish and other species. If you enjoy hiking you'll find 50+ miles of walking trails throughout the area. Some of the trails are located on the mainland while others transverse the peninsula. Anytime you go out hiking, fishing or boating, let someone know where you're going and when you're expected to return...for safety reasons. If you don't return in a reasonable amount of time...they can alert authorities and send help.

Our family spent 3 nights and 4 days exploring Voyageurs National Park in Minnesota and had a really nice time. It's a great park to get out within nature, get fresh air and frankly...just enjoy being together as a family. It's the perfect vacation destination for those who enjoy being out in the wilderness and being near a beautiful water source. You can learn more by visiting the Voyageurs National Park website.

The Broadway Series Jersey Boys at the Hershey Theatre

The Hershey Theatre in Hershey, Pennsylvania
If you enjoy the theater and Broadway Shows you'll want to check out all of the shows that are available at the Hershey Theatre in downtown Hershey, Pennsylvania. If you've never been there before, its easy to get to and within a short driving distance from Harrisburg, Gettysburg, Lancaster, York and the surrounding areas.

The Theater is Located at:

The Hershey Theatre
15 E Caracas Ave
Hershey, PA 17033

The theatre was built between 1929 and 1933. The architecture of the building is breath-taking and beautiful. The building was designed by Lancaster architect Emlen Urban, a famous architect in the area during the late 1920's.
The Hershey Theatre in Hershey, Pennsylvania

The Hershey Theatre hosts a wide variety of professional Broadway performances, musical concerts and various other forms of entertainment. You will find shows for the kids like Sesame Street Live to Broadway hits like Annie and Jersey Boys.

Last weekend we visited the theatre to see the Broadway hit Jersey Boys. This was our second time seeing the show (once on Broadway) and now in Hershey. In my honest opinion, the show in Hershey was even better than the one in New York City and we didn't have to travel 2 1/2 hours to get there!

Jersey Boys is the story of Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons. Cast Members included: Jonathan Cable, Eric Chambliss, Corey Greenan, Jonny Wexler, Ashley Bruce, Tony L. Clements, Rick Desloge, Wade Dooley, Todd DuBail, Caitlin Leary, Kevin Patrick Martin, Jeremy Sartin, Chloe Tiso, Kit Treece and Jessica Wockenfuss.
The Hershey Theatre in Hershey, Pennsylvania

The showing that we went to was an "almost" sold-out show and its was really crowded. Even so, everyone was in a great mood and excited to see the show. You'll want to enter through the doors at one of the approved entrances (front or back) and be ready to go through the security screening process. If you're taking in a handbag, security will need to see inside it. Keys, cellphones, etc. need to be placed into the tray and checked. Once through the security screening you'll need to show your admission tickets and will be directed where to go.

Jersey Boys was a 2 1/2 hour show with one 15-minute intermission. That's just enough time to use the restroom or to grab a refreshment. In my honest opinion, not enough time to do both. We used the restroom (long line) and barely made it back to our seats before the show restarted. Just wanted to mention that. The show was one of the best that we've ever seen at the Hershey Theatre and we've been to several over the past few years. If you haven't seen Jersey Boys yet, we highly recommend it.
Jersey Boys at the Hershey Theatre in Hershey, Pennsylvania

Tickets to performances can be purchased online, by phone or at the box office. They make buying your tickets easy and convenient. You can find a seating chart online and order tickets according to where you would like to sit (if available). If you're handicap, they do have some seating available for you too.

You will want to check out the Hershey Theatre website for a list of upcoming shows and performances. They keep the list updated and you'll want to reserve tickets early in the ordering process. You can connect with them on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram too!

Best Subs in Harrisburg at Flemings Sub Base on Derry Street
